Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Devices that run WM include Pocket PCs, Smartphones, Portable Media Centers, and on-board computers for certain automobiles. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows, feature-wise and aesthetically. Additionally, third-party software development is available for Windows Mobile.

Windows Mobile Operating system Versions

Pocket PC 2002 Pocket PC 2000
The Pocket PC 2000 was the predecessor of what is now known as Windows Mobile. It had basic features like Pocket Office (with Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Pocket Internet Explorer.
Pocket PC 2002 Pocket PC 2002
Pocket PC 2002 was the next step in mobile operating systems and included enhanced features for Pocket Word and Explorer, as well as a media player and support for private networking. This 2002 version was used on the first SmartPhones, Pocket PCs, and Pocket PC phones.
Windows Mobile 2003 SE

WM 2003 and WM 2003 SE
WM 2003 was the first version of the Windows Mobile platform. There were four versions available, including a version for the Smartphone, one for Pocket PCs with phone capability, a professional edition, and a premium edition for Pocket PCs.

Windows Mobile 5.0
This operating system furthered the use of flash memory, as opposed to RAM. A new version of the Office Mobile package, including PowerPoint and new features available in Word Mobile and Excel. WM 5.0 also provided greater Bluetooth support, GPS management, and increased photo/video capabilities.

This is the most current WM operating system and has three versions: the Mobile 6 Classic (for Pocket PCs), Mobile 6 Standard (for Smartphones), and Mobile 6 Professional (for Pocket PCs with phone capability). There are many new features and enhancements, including VoIP support, greater internet capability, and storage card encryption for better security.

Windows Mobile 6.1 was announced April 1, 2008. It is a minor upgrade to the existing WM 6 platform which brings with it a redesigned Home screen featuring horizontal tiles that expand on clicking to display more information, although this new home screen is featured only on WM Standard edition. Several other improvements such as threaded SMS, full page zooming in IE and 'Domain Enroll' have also been added. Domain Enroll is functionality to connect the device to System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, a product to manage mobile devices
